John Dye
Born in Miami, Florida, John Dye began showing an artistic talent at a young age. However, it was not until 1971 that he began painting watercolors. John is a graduate of Coral Gables High School and the University of Miami. After thirty one years in various management and executive positions with AT&T and Bell South, he retired to pursue and expand upon his lifelong interests: Art, boating, fishing and diving, and a love of nature.
John describes his style as realistic and detailed subject with a more impressionistic background painted in a traditional watercolor wash technique. Much of his reference material is gathered on various field trips throughout the South, especially in Florida, the Bahamas and the Appalachians. He has an extensive reference library of field sketches, photographs, and notes that allow him to create paintings of his favorite subjects; scenes of nature, bird life, tropical fish, the Everglades, nautical scenes of Florida, the Bahamas and Lighthouses of the East Coast. Johns primary medium is watercolor augmented with Acrylics mixed with water on some of his marine tropical fish scenes.
John has also earned his Captains license and charters small groups for diving and fishing trips on his trawler the “Osprey”. He currently divides his time between his home in Hobe Sound, Florida, his house in Franklin, North Carolina, and the Osprey – cruising South Florida, the Bahamas and the East Coast of the United States. This is a life style that gives him an authentic understanding of his favorite artistic themes.
John shows his work throughout the South and has received several awards for watercolors and acrylics. His art is also on display in galleries, businesses and private collections throughout the U.S. and the Bahamas. He is currently a member of the Alabama Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, the Hobe Sound Fine Art Guild, Martin County Council for the Arts, The Nature Conservancy, and the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
